CD3 recognition marks 42 years’ service November 27, Wing Logistics and Engineering Commanding Officer LieutenantColonel Brian Richardson and Branch Chief Warrant Officer William Hinchey were proud to present the third clasp to the Canadian Forces Decoration (CD3) to Sergeant Alain “Rocky” Larocque at his Depart with Dignity ceremony at the Annapolis Mess. This decoration is awarded to officers and non-commissioned members of the Canadian
Armed Forces who have completed 42 years of service with a good record of conduct. This is a rare and wonderful achievement, which all in the room were honoured to witness. Larocque joined the Forces in April 1972 as a gunner. In his first trade, he enjoyed postings to 5 RALC in Valcartier (tw ice) and the Airborne Battery in Edmonton. He also participated in countless exercises and deployments,
including Cyprus (1974), the Golan Heights and Ismailia, Egypt (1978/ 1979). Upon his return to Canada, he transferred to the Royal Canadian Air Force as an instrument electrical technician and was posted to 442 Squadron Comox, CFB Cold Lake and CFB Shearwater. While in Cold Lake, he was also deployed to the Sinai with the Multinational Force Organization as an augmentee with 427 Squadron. In 1995, he received his final posting to 14 Wing Greenwood and retired from the Regular Force as a warrant officer in 2002. He joined the Air Reserve the following day, and began work in the Air Mobile Support Equipment shop in the Transportation and Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Squadron. Larocque and his wife, Cathou, own an artisan farm, Silvery Moon Alpacas Farm, where he will be kept busy in his retirement. The couple has two children, Sebastien and Myriam, and two grandchildren, Coalbee and Jacob. 14 Wing Greenwood’s Festival of Trees event November 29 at the Annapolis Mess was a Christmas dream – food, décor, toys, electronics, treats and lots more decorated several dozen squadron and community trees. All were up for auction in support of the base’s Combined Charities campaign, raising $12,140 with partnership from S.Keddy Scotiabank Greenwood.

rot Jetté presented the first of the day’s non-perishable food items. From there, firefighters broke into three groups and canvassed all of the Residential Housing
Units seeking support of this worthy cause - and 14 Wing came through! December 8, after the Saturday drive and the collection from donation boxes spread around the wing, the food bank was presented with 2,291 pounds of food, over 1,000 pounds more than the previous year. An additional $42 was also collected and given to the food bank for its use. Wing Fire Chief Captain Bruce Paradis, Sparky and all of the firefighters thank the 14 Wing community for its efforts and gracious donations. Without this continuing support, the Upper Room Food Bank may have to turn away those in need. A note about the food bank association: this charitable organization helps, on average, over 150 families a month. The donations raised Saturday are sufficient for less than a month’s operation and, during the winter season, the demand increases for families that depend on sea-

Art marks modern ‘eyes in the sky’ success Sara Keddy, Managing editor Military history isn’t necessarily old, as portrayed in the latest piece of artwork now at the Greenwood Military Aviation Museum. The Greenwood Art Association recently presented a new painting by Guelph artist Christine Handley to the museum, depicting the early use of Heron unmanned aerial vehicles by the Canadian Armed Forces in Afghanistan. “This is the third painting in what I would like to call the ‘modern’ era,” said association president Brian Handley, “and it brings the art collection up to about 60-plus paintings.” Master Warrant Officer (retired) Steve Dornan was on hand to unveil the painting, as his image is incorporated into the piece as a representative of 14 Wing Greenwood’s role in pioneering the UAV. “UAVs have been on again/ off again in Canada,” Dornan said, “and it’s very apropos we’re doing this event in front of the museum’s Sperwar display – the Heron replaced it.”

For Christmas we propose: Colonel Iain Huddleston and Master Warrant Officer (retired) Steve Dornan present the newest Greenwood Art Association-commissioned painting to the Greenwood Military Aviation Museum November 4. Leading Seaman E.Jorge, 14 Wing Imaging Dornan started with UAVs about 16 years ago, but it was during the 10-year Afghanistan engagement “we learned a lot of lessons of what not to do, and we moved to a more robust aircraft. Corporate knowledge is now scattered throughout the military, and you will see another UAV.” Dornan knows the use of UAVs made a difference in Afghanistan, supporting Army troops with reconnaissance
flights before actual missions went off-base. “They had a distinct use, and I was happy to end my career with this aircraft and making a difference.” 14 Wing Greenwood Commander Colonel Iain Huddleston formally accepted the painting donation, noting the “direct connection” between UAV work in Afghanistan to the kind of surveillance and recognizance work being done
now over Iraq by 14 Wing and RCAF aircraft. “We would have made a huge difference and saved lives in Afghanistan with the Aurora, but we got our foot in the door with long range patrol capabilities, the Heron effort and the successes that resulted – and the continued success with today’s Block III Aurora. The missions in Iraq are all based on the start of the Sperwar and the Heron, and we’re now top-of-the-line.”

Murphy uses his own photography as a way to relax, and create memories for his busy military family. “Given the demands of service life, military families can relocate frequently and often find themselves far from family and friends. The two-day judging session took place in October. Murphy says the awards event was a “whirlwind” visit back and forth to Ottawa, but involved a good visit with his parents, who he was able to take as guests to the awards event. “Dad gave me my first camera for the summer holidays when I was 12,” Murphy says. “We were camping a lot, at provincial and national parks, and I did a lot of landscapes.” A picture he took of a sunset over a lake shore, with ripples on the water from a stone either his father or brother had just thrown, he called “Golden Lake.” “I actually won a photo con-

Get so familiar with your equipment that you
don’t have to think about it, allowing you to focus (pardon the pun) on the light, composition and the decisive moment. Set a personal goal - pick a theme or subject that excites or motivates you and build a portfolio based on it. Edit your work ruthlessly, and with a critical eye. Share your favourites and seek feedback. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes, but be sure to learn from them. Have fun!” Murphy says he doesn’t take pictures with the CAF contest in mind, but he’s pleased the results of his efforts – he drove hours out of his way on a return trip from Central Canada to take pictures of Confederation

Service adds up among CANEX staff Sara Keddy, Managing editor Visiting national CANEX vice president Mac McMillan joked working at CANEX is like “Hotel California: you can come, but you can never leave!” All jokes aside, it’s that longevity among Greenwood CANEX staff – which McMillan sees across Canada – he was pleased to recognize here November 27. Three local staff members – manager Ken Keddy, 25 years; Denise Tucker, 15 years; and Judi Hardiman, 10 years – were honoured with long service awards. “Our employees are different than in other retail workplaces,” McMillan said. “They get to know our customers, they become embedded in
the community – and that’s our strategy. We are not just a place to buy something; we’re apart of the community and life in the community.” McMillan said this trio regularly goes “above and beyond for our customers – and they know that. We’re so lucky to have people like you folks in the organization, and it’s important to acknowledge your contribution: not just these service landmarks, but day in and day out.” Keddy thanked Tucker and Hardiman specifically, but said his employee team is equally valued at the Greenwood CANEX, by himself and the local community. “Thank you all for your efforts and your help and team Greenwood CANEX staff – from left: Denise Tucker, 15 years; manager Ken Keddy, 25 years; and Judi Hardiman, work,” Keddy said. “It’s great 10 years – were honoured November 27 for long service by national CANEX vice president Mac McMillan, back work.” left, and CANEX district manager Eric Gosselin, back centre. Hicks named national ATIS Technician of the Year Corporal Jaden Braniff, Wing Telecommunications and Information Services Squadron There are currently over 800 aerospace telecommunication and information systems (ATIS) technicians serving in the Royal Canadian Air Force. Each has completed or is currently training in a myriad of technical courses that affect every facet of their work on Canadian Armed Forces bases across Canada. Like many other trades in the CAF, each year, one member is chosen as a leader in the field. This year, the prestigious
honour has been awarded to a member of 14 Wing Greenwood. During a Wing Telecommunications and Information Services Squadron (WTISS) morning meeting December 4, Major M.K. Hirst and Master Warrant Officer B.E.G. Boutilier presented Corporal Jeffrey Hicks with the ATIS Technician of the Year award. Hicks is a highly valued member of the unit and, within the last year, his accomplishments have gained him not only a Wing Commander’s Commendation but many acknowledgments from key squadrons across 14 Wing. The ATIS Technician of the
Year is a highly competitive award, and Hicks is more than deserving of this honour. WTISS members congratulate Hicks, and recognize his excellent work within the ATIS trade and as a member of the Royal Canadian Air Force.

Christmas Is Coming! Christmas Is Coming! Christmas Is Coming! Christmas Is Coming! Christmas Is Coming! The busiest time of the year for Canadian Tire employees and customers is the holiday season. Transitioning to winter brings changes customers need to consider for their vehicles whether it comes to tires, undercoating, and repairs to ensure safe travels. It is also the time of the year we are all thinking of snow and salt, and shovels and snowblowers. But the best part is celebrating the holidays and giving gifts that inspire the chef within us, the tools that make our homes and projects special, the toys and games
that bring smiles and glee to children and the trees and ornaments and trim that bring us all together to share in the season. We at Canadian Tire enjoy serving this community and making your Christmas special. We are your Greenwood Christmas store. Finally, a special thank you to the The Knights of Columbus in bringing fresh cut trees to our store. We are grateful for the local charities they support and their contributions to Canadian Tire Jump Start.

(NC) With temperatures dropping, are you preparing for your annual journey down south? According to Statistics Canada, hundreds of thousands of Canadians spend more than a month every year in southern U.S., and those numbers are on the rise. Whether you’re jetting off to a sunny vacation home or you’ve planned a road trip in your R.V., there are a number of things you’ll want to consider before you head out. Find a travel insurance plan that suits your needs - Many
Canadians make the mistake of believing, when it comes to protecting their health while on vacation, simply purchasing travel insurance is enough. Travel insurance isn’t one-sizefits-all and, depending on the policy you’ve selected, there may be limitations. Taking time to purchase a tailored plan that meets your needs will ensure you’re covered in the event of an emergency. Purchasing a new policy? Be upfront. claim in the event you require out-of-country medical assistance. Traveling by R.V. might need more coverage - Nearly one in three RV owners spend 40 nights or more each year in their R.V., yet one in five say they are not exactly sure what their insurance covers. Before heading out on the road, talk to your broker to ensure you understand the limitations of your insurance. Because requirements are different across the border, carrying a higher limit will make sure your family is protected in the event of an accident. And, check the expiry date on your insurance policy/ license plate to make sure it does not expire while you are travelling. Add securing your home to your “to-do” list - Lastly, don’t forget to secure your home before you go. As temperatures drop, the risk for damages like a pipe burst increases. If you are going on a long trip, consider shutting off the water in advance and draining the pipes to avoid major damages. Also, make arrangements with a family member or friend to regularly check all areas of your home, including the basement, shovel your sidewalks, bring in any mail or newspapers and scan to ensure that windows and doors haven’t been tampered with. Many insurance policies require you to have someone checking in on your home as often as every day if you are away from home for more than four days during the usual heating season, otherwise your coverage may become extremely limited or void. With a sunny escape, comes rest and relaxation. To ensure your trip remains stress-free, talk to your insurance broker for more information.

Save money immediately on home heating costs (NC) It’s that time of year again: your toes are numb, your cheeks are rosy, and it’s time to turn up the thermostat. As Canadians, we know these signs all too well: Old Man Winter is back in town. We may be well trained to bundle up before stepping outside, but with frigid overnight temperatures and rising heating costs, it pays to bundle up and seal your home before the deep freeze hits. Follow these simple tips to keep your home
toasty warm and your heating bills low. Change furnace filters It won’t work like a dream if it’s not clean. Be sure to replace or clean furnace filters once a month during the peak heating season. Find the leaks and fill ‘em up Since windows and doors are the main culprits for letting hot air escape, an effective way to help minimize these leaks is by applying an insulating film to windows, doors and rooms that
get little use. Another option is weather stripping doors and windows. It does come with a little labour, but Cottage Life personality, Colin Hunter, offers some do-it-yourself tips to help minimize the impact and strain on your body. “If you begin feeling aches and pains when working around the house, make sure you change your work environment before it intensifies or potentially causes more serious damage,” says Hunter. “Taking a moment to stretch is

helpful, as well as investing in a proven anti-fatigue mat that relieves stress on the knees and back, such as my favourite, the Stanley Utility Mat. It can do wonders for preventing pain.” Run fans in reverse By switching the ceiling fan’s rotation from counter-clockwise to clockwise you can circulate warm, rather than cold, air. When hot air pools near the ceiling, the clockwise rotation brings it back into the living space.

Markland Lodge of Ancient Free and Accepted Masons recently celebrated its 80th birthday at the Masonic Hall in Kingston. Lodge offices were all filled by members older than the lodge itself, ranging in age from 80 to 86 years, including front row from left: Al Latham, Senior Warden; Bill Parks Worshipful Master; Doug MacKeil, Senior Warden; Bob Cushing Tyler. In the back row are George Leaman, Marshal; Don McCoy, Director of Ceremonies; Bruce Corkum, Treasurer; George Thompson, Senior Deacon; Blair Williamson, Secretary; Richard Coleman, Junior Deacon; Dave Kennedy, Immediate Pass Master. Lodge members from around the province were in attendance to help celebrate the occasion. Fun By The Numbers Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle! sudoku brought to you compliments of

spring of 2015, and depend upon the outcome of the scoring of the surveys; regardless of the findings, KCAGoG will be working to increase community readiness to reduce gambling harm. KCAGoG formed in May 2011 with the vision of “Healthy Communities Free of Gambling Harm.” Volunteers have worked to increase the awareness of gambling harm in Kings County, reduce gambling harm and support local businesses and organizations to decrease their reliance on gambling revenues. Members of KCAGoG want local citizens to have a say in the direction legislation on gambling will take, and they want local government to take ownership of gambling harms. For information, visit KCAGoG at www.kingscommunityactiongroupongambling.ca or email [emailprotected].
